Connect to MySQL and MariaDB
Add the vendor's Connector/J driver once, then connect with a URL that names the server and the database.
| Driver | Not bundled: download MySQL Connector/J or MariaDB Connector/J and copy its JAR into drivers. |
|---|---|
| URL format | jdbc:mysql://<host>:<port>/<database> |
| Example | jdbc:mysql://dbhost:3306/mydb |
| Where the URL format comes from | MySQL Connector/J: Connection URL Syntax, checked October 17, 2026 |
| Verified with BroadSQL | Not verified with BroadSQL by the BroadSQL team: the URL formats come from the MySQL and MariaDB documentation. |
Which driver and which type
| Server | Driver to copy into drivers | Type to choose | URL format |
|---|---|---|---|
| MySQL | MySQL Connector/J ("Platform Independent") | MySQL | jdbc:mysql://<host>:<port>/<database> |
| MariaDB | MariaDB Connector/J | MariaDB | jdbc:mariadb://<host>:<port>/<database> |
The default port of both is 3306. The MariaDB URL format is documented in About MariaDB Connector/J (checked October 17, 2026); the MariaDB driver accepts only jdbc:mariadb: URLs unless the option permitMysqlScheme is added.
Steps
- Copy the driver JAR into
driversand restart BroadSQL;SHOW DRIVERS;must list it. ADD CONNECTION SHOP_QA;(orCONFIG;on Windows), typeMySQL(orMariaDB), URLjdbc:mysql://dbhost:3306/mydb(orjdbc:mariadb://dbhost:3306/mydb), then your user and password.PING SHOP_QA;, thenCONNECT SHOP_QA;.
Driver options are added after ?, separated by &: see the vendor's documentation for encryption and time zone options.
On MySQL and MariaDB
- A DDL statement (
CREATE,ALTER,DROP) commits the open transaction on MySQL. In a Production Environment, the confirmation question says so. SET PASSWORDdoes not change a MySQL or MariaDB password: change it in the database, then update BroadSQL withEDIT CONNECTION.
