Release Notes 5.5.5

Published October 23, 2026

New features

  • The activity log is written per authenticated session by default: one file from the master password to LOGOUT or EXIT, whatever the connections used, with the Instance ID, the Session ID and CONNECTED/DISCONNECTED events; LogByConnection=TRUE keeps the files per connection and day; CDF maintenance is never logged
  • SHOW SESSIONS lists the session log files, newest first, with their start, end, Session ID, Instance ID and connections; by date, period, Session ID or Instance ID
  • Each installation gets a persistent Instance ID (InstanceId in the INI file), created at its first start
  • Before every change of its INI file (CONFIG Save, Instance ID), BroadSQL saves a new dated backup, BroadSQL_<yyyyMMdd>_<HHmmss>.bak, never overwritten; the INI file is not changed when the backup fails
  • CONFIG; opens with the current connection selected in the list and its details shown; CONFIG refuses an argument
  • CONFIG has Revert (button and Edit > Revert changes) and Ctrl+Z / Ctrl+Y in text fields for changes not saved, and asks Save, Discard or Cancel before a selection change, New, Duplicate, a view change, Deactivate, Reactivate, Delete or closing would drop them
  • Ctrl+Backspace deletes the previous word in terminals that send it differently from Backspace (most Linux and macOS terminals); in the Windows console it stays one character, use Ctrl+W
  • In the BroadSQL Editor, Ctrl+Delete deletes the next word instead of the rest of the line
  • LIST takes values without parentheses (LIST ids = 123, 987;) or a one-column query (LIST codes = SELECT ...;); ${list} is written with its parentheses, IN ${codes} becoming IN ('FRA', 'DEU'), and IN (${codes}) keeps working
  • A list keeps its values' types (LIST OF TEXT, NUMBER or BOOLEAN), keeps NULL values, and is written for the database the statement runs on
  • Two more sample databases with ready connections: CINEMA (HSQLDB, an invented cinema) and LIBRARY (SQLite, an invented town library)
  • REPEAT repeats one query written in full, without BEGIN and END: REPEAT SELECT * FROM T EVERY 10s; BEGIN ... END is for several queries
  • ${name} is replaced by the scripting variable's value, as text, in every statement just before it runs: SQL (inside quotes too), every command, Script arguments, file names and paths; nothing is added or escaped
  • A list variable is written as a SQL value list: IN (${codes}) becomes IN ('FRA', 'DEU') for a text list and IN (12, 57) for a number list
  • New LIST command: LIST codes = ('FRA', 'DEU'); assigns a list variable, and LIST copy = (${codes}); copies a list
  • Apache Derby is no longer included (the Derby project was retired in October 2025): Derby connections are kept and work again with a Derby driver installed in drivers, on a best effort basis; SET PASSWORD no longer changes Derby passwords
  • jlinehistoryfile and scripthistoryvault must name two different paths: CONFIG refuses the same path for both and BroadSQL reports it at startup with an example; a new history path starts an empty history and the old one is never moved

Problems solved

  • Cursor keys with Shift, Alt or Ctrl+Shift no longer clear the line and type characters such as [1;6D: Ctrl+Shift+Left / Right move by word
  • COMPARE TABLE STRUCTURE runs the login script of the other connection, so an unqualified table name is found in the schema it sets (Oracle ALTER SESSION SET CURRENT_SCHEMA); a table not found names the schema searched
  • PULL is a keyword of DUMP: the same command, help and messages (which name DUMP), and no separate command page; PULL <table> alone does what DUMP <table> does
  • A DUMP destination between double or single quotes keeps the meaning it has without quotes: TO "my export file.country" AS XLSX writes the worksheet country of my export file.xlsx; a destination may start with an absolute or relative folder
  • Behavior change: a ${name} variable is no longer sent to the database as a typed value; a text value is written between quotes, WHERE CODE = '${code}'
  • Relative paths of BroadSQL.ini (ScriptsLibrary, DefaultFolder, ServersFileName, CustomExtensionsFolder, JsScripts, LogFolderName) are resolved against the installation folder even when BroadSQL is started from another folder; an empty Scripts Library no longer appears when that folder holds its own scripts folder
  • SHOW DRIVERS lists each bundled driver with its real version and every driver of the drivers folder, with a Source column; listing drivers no longer prints the SQL Server sqljdbc_auth.dll warning, and works on Linux
  • In CONFIG, a Windows path typed with doubled backslashes is saved escaped once, never with four; repeated saves add nothing and an over-escaped value is repaired; In use now shows the default path of an empty path setting
  • The BroadSQL Editor lists the Scripts even when the Script history folder cannot be used, and says why above the tree; an empty Scripts pane always says why; reopening the Editor lists the library again
  • A REPEAT BEGIN ... END block typed on one line without the ; of its last query now reports the missing ; with the corrected command, instead of silently waiting for more input
  • SHOW ALL CONNECTIONS and the other configuration lists widen a column to fit a long Database Group, Environment or other value, so the table stays aligned
  • SHOW GROUP lists its connections by Environment, then by connection ID, ignoring case; connections without an Environment come last
